Sharks are a type of fish with a a highly streamlined body. The earliest known sharks date from more than 420 million years ago, before the time of the dinosaurs. Sharks are found in all seas and they generally do not live in freshwater. Most sharks are carnivorous. In general, sharks swim at an average speed of 8 kilometres per hour. but when feeding or attacking, the average shark can reach speeds upwards of 19 kilometres per hour (12 mph).
